Television media is a complex topic, but it can be easily seen that it influences younger people to conform to a popular trend. Television shows that embody high school drams such as Laguna Beach, One Tree Hill, and the O.C. make the characters beautiful, wealthy, and popular. This desire to be like these characters is translated into American Highschools.

It’s called Simulcrum–the way people live their lives in parallel with media, letting fictious media decide whats in or out, what coll or gay, and how to act in certain positions. Below is a short movie made by some kooky college students trying to show you first hand simulacrum. Take a look.

Now living your life by the restrictions of media has become accepted in our society and getting close to a must, but what happens.

People tend to conform to a certain style and identity even if they are not representing their true self. Whats the probelm with this you ask? Well, indiviuality is lost, and sameness results. Society is weaken as the rate of new ideas, innovations, thoughts, and philophies continue to down spiral, the American thought is becoming the same. American youth must realize that simulacrum is not the life needed to be lived or represented. Kids need to realize that they must be themselves, and represent themselves as the people they truly are. This way American society will be diverse and new ideas will come again.

Television: ADDICTION, ENTERTAINING, HARMFUL, STUPID, CENSORED, DAUNTING, FUN, NEGATIVE, FOREBODDING, [AT TIMES UNCONTROLLABLE]

The Article below defines television addiction and how to cure it.

Television Addiction – What is it?
It is noted that the average person spends about three hours a day sitting in front of the TV set, which is half of their leisure time. And, it is known that heavy viewers report watching eight hours a day. The question is, “Are these people addicted to the television?”

First, let’s define an addiction. It is said that addiction is characterized by spending an unusually large amount of time using a substance that is addictive; finding oneself using it more often than intended; thinking about reducing the use, and are making repeated unsuccessful attempts to reduce it; giving up social activities to use the substance, and reporting withdrawal symptoms when one does achieve stopping the use.

Television can teach and amuse, and it does provide needed distraction and escape. Yet, the difficulty arises when one strongly senses the need to stop viewing as much, and yet find they are unable to reduce viewing.

Television Addiction – What are the Effects?
In 1997, 700 Japanese children were rushed to a hospital to be treated with epileptic seizures. These seizures were later attributed to a program which was aired that involved an exaggerated version of the Pokemon game that had flashing colorful lights.

Laboratory experiments1 have also been done to study people’s reactions to TV by monitoring brain waves by the use of EEG (electroencephalograph). Those who participated in the study carried a beeper. They were signaled six to eight times a day randomly over the period of a week. When they heard the beep, they were to write down what they were doing and how they were feeling. People who were watching TV when beeped reported feeling relaxed and passive. The studies showed less mental stimulation as measured by alpha brain-wave production during viewing TV than if these participants had been reading. After the television set was turned off, this study showed the participants were still very relaxed and passive as if all energy had left them.

This suggests1 that TV viewing has a numbing effect, and reaction to the body is likened to that of a tranquilizer. Drowsiness occurs, and one may even experience depression as the viewing continues. A person actually disengages from real life becoming immersed in what is being shown on the screen which, in turn, causes excessive viewing; more so than anticipated in the beginning.

Television Addiction – How to Avoid It
Is there hope from becoming struck with television addiction? Yes, start here.

Keep a record of how much TV you watch and when you watch. Do this for one week.

List all the other fun activities you can do at home instead of watching TV. Place your list on your refrigerator so you can check this list BEFORE you turn on the TV. Consider fun things to do as a family, household projects you’d like to complete, outside activities, reading, exercise, etc.

Set a limit for how much TV you will watch in one week. Record your time and stick to your commitment.

Commit to exercising whenever you watch TV, such as walking on a treadmill, riding a stationary bike, etc.

Consider removing your TV for a set period of time. You might find yourself talking to your family again instead of watching the TV so much.

Television Addiction – A Personal Story of Surrender
One day, I realized that everywhere I went, there was a TV — the grocery store, my workout gym, the bank, my church, the airport, repair shops, doctors offices, and many rooms of my own home. My family room had even been renamed the TV room. Where could I go to escape it?

I decided to do something about it. My family did not have to suffer from television addiction any longer. When my family moved to a new city recently, we deliberately did not bring the TV with us. Our friends and family thought we were crazy, but it was an important step for our family. The housing development we moved into offered a new beautiful TV to our family, but I declined. As the husband and father of our family, I wanted to take a stand and show my children that they meant more to me than TV.

The past few years, the violence and objectionable content has gotten worse and I felt that our family needed a break. I felt as though TV had hijacked my family and I wanted to protect my children from television addiction.

The solution that worked for my family — I got rid of our television! The result has been more family time and healthier relationships.

This family decided that giving up their TV was the best solution for them. What is your solution? Don’t delay. Set some guidelines and stick to your commitments.

This video combats negative influence to children. NEGATIVE INFLUENCE COMES FROM TELEVISION. Television places shows, commercials, and interviews on the air that influences children to follow the footsteps of the certain media sources. This commercials is labeled under youtbe as “Best TV Commercial Ever” why? because it shows what children learn from the world. Just as with shampoo, children wash, rinse, and repeat basically meaning that children continue to try new things they see and hear and it makes them think that what they do is okay.

This is sad. As more children become negatively infleunced, the more the world is affected. The youth is the enxt adult generation, obviously, and if they are gaining the bad values that should be stricken from society today, it will continue to repeat. How do you stop this? With this type of media. This commercial serves a great purpose to combat the influence. With more media that surrounds its topics around this issue, the youth will become more oriented with positive influences and make the world a better place. Will it work? That is dependent on you. You be the positive example, you be the teacher, and you avoid the negative and make the world a better place.

But anyway try doing something different. Something different from you and the norm. Something that you may have always wanted to do. Dress up different. Eat something you would never try. Instead of your first answer to something try your second choice. Something that puts yourself in a different position.
How do you respond? Are you uncomfortable?

People feel uncomfrortable to try new things because it isn’t their norm. Comfortable doing somehting is easy, but going out of your way to do somehting different becomes intimidating. People tend to think what happens if they screw up? What happens to their sense of comfort?

What needs to be done, is clear your mind of the consiqences and think about the possibilites. Be open to new things, responses, and task. It might just change how you think or how you perceive the world. Let me know. I want to know something that you did that was different from yourself. And did you like it?

These statistics are outrageous. Television is directly related to influencing humans. Now this is bad, because especially the fiction provides a greater influence.

On December 10th, 2003, Fox failed to bleep the f-word and the s-word during the Billboard Music Awards.

# of 2-11 yr olds Watching = Over 1 million

# of 12-17 yr olds Watching = Over 1 Million

These two groups comprised more than 20% of the total viewing audience.

Estimated number of TV homes: 109.6 million

Average time kids spend watching TV each day: 4 Hours

Children spend more time watching television than in any other activity except sleep. - Huston and Wright, University of Kansas. “Television and Socialization of Young Children.”

54% of kids have a TV in their bedroom. - Ibid

44% of kids say they watch something different when they’re alone than with their parents (25% choose MTV)

66% of children (ages 10 to 16) surveyed say that their peers are influenced by TV shows

62% say that sex on TV shows and movies influences kids to have sex when they are too young

77% say there is too much sex before marriage on television

65% say that shows like The Simpsons and Married… With Children encourage kids to disrespect parents.

In a sample of programming from the 2001-2002 TV season, sexual content appeared in 64% of all TV programs. Those programs with sexually related material had an average of 4.4 scenes per hour. Talk of sex is more frequent (61%) vs. overt portrayals (32%). 1 out of every 7 programs includes a portrayal of sexual intercourse.

Portrayals that included sexual risks (stds or becoming pregnant), abstinence or need for sexual safety was depicted in 15% of the shows with sexual content. Hence, sexual content on TV is more likely to promote sexual activity among US adolescents that it is to discourage it.

Media influences Kids. Thats it. DOne deaL!

DO YOU SEE THE PICTURE ABOVE OF THE ROBOTS???

Well here it is just in case

Well, i hope you do because than this post would be pointless. You see all of the same robots walking right and the one different color walking by itself left. He is avoiding conformity and walks by himself. Many people and me a some points felt that i was the lone robot walking by myself. Then someone told me that the picture wasn’t complete. You must add 5 of the same pictures to it, because there are more of the anti conformers than ones think.

Humans are conforming agents, we all conform in some senses. Can anyone think of something that feel they conform in? Or something they completely avoid conforming in?

This shit is true. There are people out there that arent as extreme as him, but feel the neccessity to have new haircuts, aka to become the role to attract the opposite sex. People choose clothes, shoes, jewlery, etc. that will add to their image to help them witht he opposite sex. Is this right?

HAZARDOUS WARNING: ANY ATTENTION TO THE HILLS INCREASES THE RISK OF BRAIN CELL DESTRUCTION AND DEATH. WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

CONFORMERS AND CONSUMERS TAKE 1:

ACTION!!!

The MTV hit televison show, “The Hills” documents the life of young women working and living the rich life in Los Angelos, CA. They have become popular and their shows is one of the most popular shows among teenagers today. Teens believe this is true, their lives, their fashion, and their stories, yet it is manipulated by directors to produce the most effective show that will stimulate the most attention. Teens take this show into account with their manifestations of their style, wadrobe, and so-called indivuality but as the viewer engages to produce the most acceptable replica of the celebrities portrayed, they (the viewers) are just conformers and consumers to the overall fakeness of the show. Ultimately directors produce what is most effective, and cut the broing stuff, so this show “The Hills” is not a real life story but just another show that highlights pretty girls, cut guys, alcohol, parties, money and fashion, all of the elements to produce a successful, popular product.
